Brook Hill Azalea
Richmond, VA USA
In 1968-70, I raced slot cars at the shopping mall, Brook Hill Azalea,
in Richmond, Virginia.
When you are ten years old, things like this get burned in your mind.
You close your eyes and go around and around... let off the thumb, then mash it down! Now hold
down all the way around the banking and down the backstraight almost to the kink,
a quick lift, now through the tunnel, feather it while the car is out of sight,
now gradually increase , increase, increase...
NOW MASH IT!! and scream right past your hands down the straight...
around and around and around.
I remember clear as day the two big tracks, the blue skirted pro track, with a white fiberglass roadway,
and the red skirted one whose black straight-a-ways were as long as our house!
All those colored stripes!
I've tried to draw them from memory, below. I drove many more laps
in my mind than in reality, so over time the tracks have become a little swoopier! -Jim Allen 8-29-02
