HO Scratchbuilding in the Vintage Magazines, pg. 5
by Jim Allen, June 2004
Here are pictures from two HO scratchbuilder's articles in Car Model,
plus shots of two more HO cars with cool scratchbuilt brass pan chassis. Enjoy!

In the August 1970 issue of Car Model, Tom Malone scratchbuilds this superb brass pan anglewinder chassis.
|
In Dale Flanagan's HO Racing column in the November 1970 issue of Car Model we
get a glimpse of the first commercial HO anglewinder chassis, Ted Schwalbe's Challenger. The chassis were individually
scratchbuilt, and handled well in the corners.

In the March 1971 Car Model we see HO columnist Dale Flanagan's own scratchbuilt HO anglewinder.
His advice: "Keep it simple."

"How to Build Bob's HO Lead Sled Chassis"
is the first of two articles (Part 2 below) written by Sal Lucania, with
chassis builder Bob Kirchner. This step-by-step, fully
illustrated article begins on page 45 of Car Model, November 1971.
Bob Kirchner
builds a plumbered, floppied brass pan lead sled, with all the details of
the big league pro 1/24 scale chassis telescoped down to miniature 1/64 (1/87?) This
unbelievable little creation is fully captured in Sal Lucania's pictures and words.

Car Model magazine, January 1972, page 39-41, holds part 2 in the Lucania/Kirchner series,
"Setting Up Bob's HO Lead Sled."
This article covers wheels, tires, magnet shims, armature
polishing, pickup secrets and other fine details.
